by admin

Do You Have Commitment Issues With Losing Weight?

Usually when we think about the word “commitment,” we think in terms of romantic relationships, but even more important than romance is your relationship with your health. Many people vow to finally lose weight for good in the New Year, but how many actually follow through on their New Years Resolution? Just because the Holidays are over and you want to shed those extra pounds doesn’t mean that you’re truly in the mind frame to do what it takes to begin a long-term weight loss campaign. To make your New Years Resolution to lose weight stick, first assess whether you’re truly ready to begin a new diet and exercise lifestyle regimen and follow through with consistency for the next 365 days of the year.

Are You Ready to Begin a Weight Loss Plan?

By Alan Foosnes

It is that time of year again when many people decide to create New Year’s Resolutions. The most popular ones will involve stopping some sort of behavior and usually smoking and weight loss are at the top of the list. Weight loss and smoking are also the behaviors that people stop somewhere in the middle of the year. They give up because they get discouraged because they feel they just can’t stop. One of the first things to do before you embark on any type of behavior change is to see whether you are ready for it. Weight loss is about change and this is very important to know.

Weight Loss Must Bring Lifestyle Change

It can be difficult to think about change and when you are losing weight it means a lifestyle change. Whether you want to lose a few pounds or several there will be changes that happen because of it. As an example, just a few extra pounds lost will make people take a different look at you.

Many people will undergo attitude or motivational changes because they will see themselves different. Other people will become more outgoing and seek to meet new friends. This will cause a different way of being that may be good for some people but others may not like the changes you are making.

Weight loss also means that you will be eating more healthy foods and desiring to understand you overall fitness. This too can be alarming to your friends and/or family because they have grown to know you in a certain way and they have a difficult time with change.

How Do you Know You Are Ready to Start?

The point is that you will need to decide whether you are ready to start a weight loss program because it is going to take time and energy to make it happen. Here are some questions to ask yourself:

Are you motivated enough to make a lifestyle change? You will need to commit to eating healthy foods which mean more fruits and vegetables to start. You will also need to start exercising. Be honest with yourself and ask whether you are going to start this challenge or not. If you are not ready then it’s better not to start until you can say you will commit.

Are you patient with yourself? Many people want to lose weight quickly but the truth of the matter is that losing weight takes time. If you lose 1 or 2 pounds a week this is a safe and healthy way to make sure you will lose overtime. If you are an impatient person this may not work for you.

Are you realistic in your weight loss goals? There is a difference between losing 10 or 20 pounds and losing a lot more. If you have more than 10 or 20 pounds it is a good idea to talk to a doctor about how you can safely take the weight off. Be realistic so you do not get discouraged along the way.

Do you have a network of people who support you in your weight loss? Everyone needs friends and/or family that will support you in your weight loss. However, you do not need people who hound you about your attempts. If you have healthy people around you who applaud your efforts no matter what, you can be sure they will help you when your weight loss gets tough.

As you approach this next year, think about these questions and see how your answer measure up.
